Bring a law firm’s case and accounting records together

Case records and accounts were held in separate systems. I moved them into a shared business system, with a practice-management application linking the firm’s cases and financial records.

What moved, and from where

Zeus IP, an intellectual property practice in New Delhi, was running on 2 systems that did not speak to each other: legacy case management and accounting, each holding part of the answer. A question that touched both had to be answered out of both.

Both went into one ERP. The accounting landed in the ERP's own invoices, journals and payments; the case model went into a practice-management app built for the firm, so the 2 are linked rather than merely adjacent.

Why it keeps working

A migration that only works once is a trap. Upgrade the software a year later and the custom parts quietly break, and the firm is back to paying somebody to re-do them.

So the case model is a proper part of the system rather than something hand-made inside the live database. It upgrades with everything else, it comes back by itself on a rebuilt server, and reinstalling it re-applies the definitions without writing to the records themselves. The practical test is that the records stay usable without anyone re-running the migration.
